The story of a janitor-turned-principal that’s sure to make you smile

The First Sip

Mike Huss began work as a janitor at Ione Elementary School 30 years ago.

This month, he became the school’s principal

It’s an unlikely story…unless you know the guy.

After graduating high school, Mike immediately began work as the school’s janitor.

But after seeing how he interacted with the students, they encouraged him to get his teaching degree.

And he did…

I wanted to show my young son [that] if your dad can be the school janitor coaching youth sports, maintain a good grade point average and become a school teacher, you can accomplish anything in this life son.

After 11 years of working as the school’s janitor, he began teaching 5th grade at the same elementary school – a role he would embrace for 19 years…

…until he got a call this summer.

“They reached out to me and said, ‘We think you’re the leader the school needs’. That was very humbling and it brings chills just to say it,” Mike recalls.

While it’s only been a few weeks, Mike is loving his new role.

His administrators say the only difficult part of the job has been keeping him in his office 🤣

Mike loves being with his students so much that he’s always poking his head in classrooms and engaging with the kids in the hallway.

His staff has to pull him back and make sure he answers emails and does all of the administrative tasks!

Asked what he hopes his impact will be, he didn’t hold back…

“Believe in one person every day that you’re here. Help them see themselves in a different light. That’s what people have done for me my whole life. And that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to help students believe in themselves.”

What a great message…

We all have people in our lives who need a little more encouragement and belief – who is that person for you?

I know Shift Nation is full of highly disciplined folks who are motivated and driven.

And, listen, I’m one of them.

I love waking up every single morning and getting the opportunity to help advisors grow their businesses, add new clients, earn more money, etc.

I know you feel that same jolt of energy when it comes to helping people with their finances.

But sometimes super driven people like you and me need to be reminded that breaks are a good thing!

And here’s the best part…

All it takes is a short “microbreak” to experience benefits.

According to a brand new study, 10-minute microbreaks are shown to boost people’s vigor, decrease fatigue, and improve performance.

(They may even be more beneficial than longer breaks of 45-60 minutes.)

I recommend taking at least one 10-minute break every 1.5 hours.

This keeps you fresh, while still allowing you to be highly productive throughout the day.

☕  TL;DR: Research shows 10 minutes is the optimum length of a break.

Marketing Quick Hit

Ever find yourself in a situation where you have to hold an impromptu meeting with a prospect or client?

You know…like when you’re in the airport headed off for vacation.

Or it’s a Saturday morning and you’re at the coffee shop catching up on some emails.

Well, just because you’re out of your office, doesn’t mean you can’t come across as “professional.”

Here are two VERY simple tools you can use to hold impromptu meetings in busy/noisy environments, while still looking like you have it all together…

  • Krisp. This free noise canceling app uses AI to remove background noise so that your microphone only picks up your voice. It can remove barking dogs, screaming toddlers, noisy trucks, and even other people’s conversations. You have to try it!
  • Blurred backgrounds. Most of us have used Zoom virtual backgrounds before, but I find them to be very choppy and distracting when you’re on-the-go and don’t have a green screen. In these situations, I like using the “blurred background” feature. It removes distractions behind you without needing a green screen.

Do you have any other favorite tools that you use? I’d love to hear what they are.

Just hit “reply” to this email and let me know!

☕  TL;DR: Use these 2 tools to hold distraction-free meetings anywhere!

Weekly Industry Catch-Up

🔹 GameStop on the big screen. Remember the “Meme Stock” craziness in January 2021 that sent the GameStop (GME) stock soaring? Rumor has it SNL alum Pete Davidson and Hollywood star Seth Rogen are making a move about it, called “Dumb Money.”

🔹 Sizzle snuffed. As the housing market cools down, 1 in 5 home sellers is now dropping their asking price. (The median listing price around the country is down from $449,000 in July to $435,000 in August.) Homes are also sitting on the market an average of five days longer than they did a year ago.

🔹 Inflation impact. A new study shows 3 out of 4 American consumers are already cutting their spending by a minimum of 25% to offset inflation. Half of people have cut their daily spending in half to make ends meet.
