The First Sip

Hey Sunday Brewers!

Pour a fresh cup o’ Joe, because we’ve got some goodies for you, including…

  • A good reason to exercise HARDER
  • Simple tactics for more effective virtual presentations
  • Data from a brand new study on financial priorities in 2022

But before we get to the tactics, here’s something good happening in the world this week…

I absolutely love this story out of North Carolina, where a nonprofit is building FREE homes for foster families.

The goal is to build homes that are big enough to keep large sibling groups together under one roof (when they’d otherwise have to be split up).

“It’s very, very difficult to find a family that’s got the capacity to take two, certainly three, children,” says Alex Williams, founder of Fostering Hope.

In many cases, sibling groups are split up and sent across the state, simply because foster families don’t have the room to take them in.

This compounds the trauma they experience and often prevents siblings from seeing each for years at a time.

But with Fostering Hope, large homes are built and designed specifically for fostering.

For example, they’re currently building a 3,600-square-foot home with five bedrooms and two bonus rooms – large enough to house FIVE children!

“It means they get to stay in the community they’re familiar with,” Williams

“And it’s far more likely they’ll be able to go home to reunify with their parents in a healthy way.”

Williams is using this nonprofit to bring HOPE to children who may typically be without it… and we’re loving it.

Suffering from work-related stress or anxiety?

Try exercising harder

A new study suggests exercising as hard as you can is the best way to alleviate symptoms of chronic stress and anxiety without drugs.

More specifically, circuit training – which mixes both cardio and strength exercises – decreases muscle tension and boosts the release of endorphins.

The most interesting part of the study is the relationship between intensity and relief.

The harder you work out, the greater improvement in stress and anxiety symptoms.

If you aren’t already, I’d encourage you to get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Not only will you be healthier, but you’ll be a better advisor for your clients.

☕  TL;DR: To reduce stress and anxiety, up the intensity of your workouts.

Marketing Psychology Quick Hit

In the late 1800s a psychologist stumbled upon something called the “spacing effect.”

It basically says that people learn new material best when taking breaks.

This allows the brain to consolidate the information learned and prevents overwhelm.

Yet, despite this, I still see so many advisors try to cram as much information as they possibly can into 90-minute seminars and 60-minute planning presentations.

I genuinely believe that this whole “Zoom Fatigue” movement that people are talking about is really just a byproduct of the violation of the spacing effect.

If you want to be effective with webinars and Zoom meetings, you need to be more focused in your approach.

👇 Here are some pointers 👇

  • Repeat chunks of information multiple times throughout a presentation.
  • If you have lots of information to cover, turn it into a series. (A series of blog posts, podcast episodes, YouTube videos, emails, etc.)
  • Slow down your talking pace. (Use plenty of pauses.)

☕  TL;DR: When teaching a concept, use breaks to help with retention.

Weekly Industry Catch-Up

🔹 That’ll leave a mark. What in the Facebook is happening? On Thursday, the FB stock price plummeted by 26%  – whipping out $29 billion of Zuckerberg’s net worth in one fell swoop.

The problem has to do with the social network’s stagnant user base and the rise of more compelling alternatives. (Hey, TikTok!)

🔹 Crypto survey says… Currently, just 20% of financial advisors are counseling crypto holding clients. By the end of this year, advisors expect that number to increase to 44%

Experts continue to warn that now is the time for advisors to get educated.

🔹 Financial Cents. According to a new study, Americans have three major financial priorities in 2022: (1) Increase or begin saving for retirement (66%), (2) Pay off debt (65%), and (3) Start or grow an emergency fund (63%).

Most importantly, 70% of respondents say they want to work with a financial professional in the next year to help them achieve these goals.
