In 2017, 7-year-old Tani and his family fled a hostile situation in Nigeria looking for a new start in America.
Little did they know what kind of surprises were in store.
The first surprise wasn’t a good one…
They were given dingy temporary housing in a homeless shelter perched above a seedy motel.
The second surprise?
Pretty incredible…
After enrolling in a nearby public school with an active chess club, Tani wanted to join.
But the $330 registration fee made it impossible for his family.
When chess club coaches found out about the boy’s situation, they waived the fee and welcomed him in.
After just 12 months of playing chess, Tani won the New York State chess championship 🏆
Then his chess coach set up a GoFundMe account and the community raised $250k in a span of 10 days to get the family back on their feet.
Now as a 5th grader, Tani is recognized as a national chess master.
His next goal?
“I want to be the youngest grandmaster,” he says. “I want to have it when I’m 11 or 12.”
That would make Tani the youngest grandmaster ever.

Stress…anxiety…depression…
Mental health concerns are on the rise.
Between social media, negative news, and our constant attachment to devices, it can be difficult to get our minds in a healthy state.
But if you want to get into a better headspace, all it takes is regular acts of kindness.
According to a study on highly anxious individuals, 6 random acts of kindness (RAKs) per week led to…
…a significant increase in positive moods, better relationship satisfaction, and a decrease in social avoidance.
Sounds like we all need to up our RAK game!
Here’s a few ideas
- When parking your car, take out a piece of paper and pen. Leave a note to a fellow car (driver 😃) to let them know that they did an amazing job at parking.
- Smile genuinely at 5 strangers throughout your day.
- Take some flowers or sweet treats to a nurse’s station at a nearby hospital.
- Give up your seat so someone else can sit on the train or bus.
- Hold the door open for someone.
- Make a goodie bag of treats, canned food, and warm gloves, socks or a hat and give it to a homeless person.
☕ TL;DR: Random acts of kindness are proven to boost your mood. Do something nice.
