The First Sip

Officer Seara Burton tragically passed away a couple of weeks ago in the line of duty.

But she has certainly not been forgotten.

Shortly after her passing, a man walked into the Richmond, Indiana police station and handed Lieutenant Donnie Benedict a small white envelope with 8 one dollar bills and a wrinkled note.

The note had four words inscribed on it:

“– People from the street”

The anonymous individual explained that several people from the homeless community took up a donation and wanted to give it to Seara’s family.

“There have been many valuable gifts given in honor of Seara. However none, and I mean none, are more valuable than the gift of 8 $1 bills in a dirty white envelope,” Benedict said at the funeral this past week.

Word of this simple act of kindness spread quickly in the community and hundreds of people have now rallied behind the homeless population.

Community members have collected enough donations to fill an entire room at the Richmond Fire Station.

Items include blankets, tents, water, coats, food, and more.

“Her mom told me that she would love this. She would love people helping people and reaching out,” one community member said.

“Everyone feels so hopeless and I feel like now that, unfortunately, Seara is gone, this is the best legacy you could ever leave behind is people showing kindness to the other citizens in honor of her.”

Your spouse, best friend, or business partner can probably tell when you’re stressed out of your mind.

But your dog can smell when you’re stressed.

On a biological level, stress triggers physiological changes in your breath and sweat.

According to a new study, man’s best friend can SMELL these changes.

In the study, researchers collected breath and sweat samples from humans before and after completing stress-inducing tasks.

Dogs were then tasked to distinguish between “stress” and “baseline” samples.

The dogs correctly identified 94% of the 720 trial samples.

But here’s the most interesting thing…

Dogs aren’t just good at identifying stress. They’re also good at weeding it out of humans.

Research shows simply petting a dog lowers the stress hormone cortisol and increases levels of oxytocin (the feel-good hormone).

This is why 84 percent of PTSD patients who are paired with a service dog see a significant reduction in symptoms.

The takeaway for you as a stressed-out advisor?

Spend more time with your dog.

Take Fido on a walk.

Bring him into the office.

You’ll be happier for it.

☕  TL;DR: Fight off stress by spending more time with your ‘best friend’

Marketing Psychology Quick Hit

I know you’re probably not thinking about 18-to-25-year-olds as your target demographic right now…

But I would encourage you to pay attention to the trends and movements that define Gen Z.

For example, did you know that 91% of Gen Z’ers say there’s “no such thing” as “mainstream” pop culture?

In their eyes, the concept of “mainstream culture” has been replaced by subcultures and niche communities like…

  • Gaming: Streetwear X Gamers, Gamer Girls
  • Entertainment: Horror Healers, Poetic Connectors
  • Education: Adult-ing Hackers, Scientific Edutainers
  • Fashion: Maximalists, Real-Time Fashionistas, UP-thrifters
  • Beauty: Cursed Cosplayers, Beauty ASMR-tists, Cover Boys

If you’re thinking to yourself, I don’t know what the heck “Streetwear X Gamers” or “Real-Time Fashionistas” are…

…well, right there with ya!

But that’s not the point.

The point I’m trying to make is that the marketplace is shifting.

People want to be communicated to in a very specific way.

They’re tired of being generalized and want you to speak their language.

If I’ve said it 1x, I’ve said it 1,000xfind a niche and go all-in on it

Mainstream culture is eroding (and mainstream marketing is going with it).

This is the age of niche cultures and niche marketing.

Advisors who embrace this shift will thrive over the next decade.

☕  TL;DR: To win as an advisor in 2023 and beyond, focus on subcultures.

Weekly Industry Catch-Up

🔹 Back-2-back. The stock market had something to cheer about this week. The 5% gain on Monday and Tuesday accounted for the best back-to-back days since April 2020 (and the best two-day start to Q4 since 1953). Markets were a bit more up and down in the second half of the week, as investors remain on high alert.

🔹 Debt gets messy. Gross national debt in the U.S. has hit a new high of $31 trillion. (That’s $93,000 per person, for those of you tracking from home.) And despite lawmakers saying the Inflation Reduction Act will reduce the deficit by $240 billion, independent committees predict another $4.8 trillion will be added by 2031.

🔹 Balloon pop? Mortgage purchase applications fell 13% over the previous week – a decline that coincided with the first weekly 7% mortgage rate reading since 2002. In “significantly overvalued” markets, Moody’s Analytics forecasts 25% to 30% home price declines if/when a full-blown recession hits.
